SPS holds petition signing demonstration in Belgrade's Republic Square on June 28th, the Serbian holiday of Vidovdan and the 2nd Anniversary of the Kidnapping of Milosevic
Under the authoritarian government in Belgrade, which greatly increased its suppression of dissent starting in March, political protests are banned. [1] But on June 28th, Milosevic's Socialist Party of Serbia staged a nationwide petition gathering, which turned into impromptu demonstrations in many cities.
The petition demanded the abolition of the Hague Tribunal and an end to the fire sale of the country to Western capitalists.
Over the period of only a couple of hours the SPS gathered more than 3,000 signatures at their table in Republic Square in Belgrade, and 60,000 signatures in the whole of Serbia.
The "democratic" police were unhappy that the SPS flag was displayed publicly in Belgrade so they "invited" the organizer of the petition drive to come to the police station with them. Later he was released.
I was in Serbia on June 28th as part of an incredibly exciting visit as a guest of the youth section of Milosevic's party, the SPS. I absolutely loved Serbia. The Serbs I met were remarkable people and the SPS members were devoted to the people and to Milosevic. You may not believe this, but I'm back in Washington state now and I'm homesick for Yugoslavia.
